Printmaking through Photographic and Alternative Processes

Liz created a home studio practice focused on intertwining photographic and traditional printmaking methods. Her photographic practice is currently focused on cyanotypes, and has created works such as Greyhound in Daisies, a traditional approach to the light-sensitive dye, while also exploring photographic printing on fabric and wearable items. Using a press, Liz also creates linocut prints using the reduction method. Her interest in natural beings is also found in her linocut print series featuring Coneflowers, Feverfew and Calendula.

Evil Eye Armor, Shirt, 2023 is a wearable, functional cyanotype of evil eyes on a thrifted, 100% cotton shirt. The Evil Eye symbol dates back to ancient Egypt but is seen all over the world as an object and symbol of protection. Evil Eyes adorn the back panel of the shirt, watching the wearer’s back. The accompanying pants, feature a variety of eyes down the side panels, viewed from the side when the wearer walks. Liz is interested in creative intentionality and reducing environmental impacts by locally sourcing materials as much as possible and by using plant-based fabrics when necessary.

Originally from Lancaster, Liz is interested in Pennsylvania native flora, and is currently incorporating dried flowers in her work. She is cultivating a Native Pollinator garden on her property with the goal of becoming pollinator certified through the PSU Master Gardener program. Interested in natural science, Liz brings research into her work with books and hikes, focusing on trails dedicated to native conservation. She grows and dries her own flowers for cyanotypes to reduce the environmental impact bringing live plants into her artistic practice.

For her contribution to “Flora & Fauna” at curio, Liz sought inspiration from House Rock and its preservation areas, found in southern Lancaster County. Following the Ralph Goodno and Conestoga Trails, Liz was inspired by the flowing flower meadows that draw in insects and birds, encouraging the regrowth desperately needed for native plants and animals. Liz created a map and negatives of the area, and combined dried flowers to create one long image across the 15 individual mini pieces of paper. These prints will be forever separated and swapped at the end of the show; the artists who all use different mediums and processes will all trade and keep one of everyone’s works for their own personal themed collection.
